TripSplit Support
Questions, bug reports and feature ideas are welcome. Email support@tripsplitapp.org. TripSplit is built and supported by one person, so replies can take a few days.
To help me find the problem, please include your iOS version, the TripSplit version (Settings > General > iPhone Storage, or the App Store page), and what you expected to happen. Please don't send receipt photos or other personal details unless I ask for them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I scan a receipt?
When adding an expense, choose the camera or photo option, then take or pick a picture of the receipt. TripSplit fills in what it can read. Always check the amount before saving, especially on handwritten tips or faint printing.
The scan got the wrong total. What can I do?
Edit the amount before you save. Scans can misread blurry or faded receipts, and receipts that show a total both before and after a tip are the hardest. For best results, photograph the receipt flat, in good light, with all four edges visible.
How does TripSplit handle children and couples?
Each person has a group size. A couple is 2, and a child counts as half a share (for example, two adults and one child is 2.5). Equal splits use these sizes. You can also split by ratio or by exact percent (percentages must total 100%).
How does Even Up work?
Even Up adds up what each person paid and what each person owes, then finds the smallest set of payments that settles everyone. It always shows amounts in your home currency.
How are exchange rates set?
TripSplit downloads daily reference rates and uses them to convert between currencies. They are for splitting costs between friends, not for banking. The rate your card or bank actually applied may differ slightly.
My trips are not syncing between devices.
Check that you are signed in to the same Apple Account on both devices, that iCloud Drive is on, and that TripSplit is enabled under Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Saved to iCloud (or Apps Using iCloud). Syncing needs a network connection and can take a few minutes. If it still fails, email me and mention which devices you are using.
How do I back up or move my data?
Your data lives in your iCloud account and on your device, so it comes along when you restore or move to a new iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account. You can also email yourself a trip summary from the trip's export option.
How do I delete my data?
Delete trips or expenses inside the app (deleted items can be restored from Recently Deleted until they are removed). Deleting the app does not remove data stored in iCloud. To remove it, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > TripSplit and delete the data. I do not hold a copy of your trips, so there is nothing to request from me. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Subscriptions
TripSplit offers an auto-renewing subscription (monthly or yearly) with a 7-day free trial for eligible new subscribers, and a small free allowance before you subscribe. Apple handles all payments.
- See your status: In TripSplit, Settings > Subscription shows whether you are subscribed and, during the free allowance or the free trial, how many expenses and AI receipt scans you have left.
- Free allowance before you subscribe: You can try TripSplit with up to 10 expenses in total and 5 AI receipt scans. Deleting expenses or trips does not give them back. When the 10 expenses are used, TripSplit becomes read-only: you can still view and export everything, and subscribing lets you keep adding.
- Importing trip files: Importing a trip file needs an active subscription or free trial. Exporting and emailing trips is always free.
- Manage or cancel: In TripSplit, Settings > Subscription > Manage Subscription, or on your iPhone under Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions > TripSplit. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period to avoid being charged for the next one. After you cancel, you keep access until the period you paid for ends.
- Switch between monthly and yearly: Use Manage Subscription. Apple applies the change: an upgrade normally takes effect at once, and a downgrade takes effect when the current period ends. Your access continues throughout.
- Restore purchases: Open Settings > Subscription > View Plans and tap Restore Purchases (useful on a new iPhone). The app tells you whether your subscription was restored or none was found.
- Scan limits: AI receipt scanning is limited to 5 scans in the free allowance and 25 scans during the free trial (scans you used from the free allowance count toward the 25). When you reach the limit, TripSplit reads receipts on your device instead where your iPhone supports it, which is less accurate, or you can enter expenses by hand. Subscribing past the trial removes the limit.
- Payment problems: If a renewal payment fails, Apple may show a "Billing Problem" message and keep your access for a grace period while it retries. Update your payment method in your Apple Account settings. If the payment cannot be collected, the subscription lapses and the app goes read-only until you subscribe again.
- Family Sharing: Where Apple allows it, the subscription can be shared with your Apple Family Sharing group.
- Refunds: Apple processes refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- If your subscription ends: your trips, expenses, receipts and balances stay available to view and export, and the Even Up screen still works. Creating trips, adding, editing or deleting expenses, importing trip files, and AI receipt scanning need an active subscription or free trial. See the Terms of Use.
